Endowment of the “Christmas budget” for “Menschen für Menschen”

This year, as in years past, we have invested again in the future.

This time, our investments are going toward Ethiopia in order to build schools there. We have put the majority of our budget for giving back in the reliable hands of the organization “Menschen für Menschen”:

Menschen für Menschen has set ambitious goals for itself: Its “ABC-2015” program aims to help educate hundreds of thousands of children and dramatically raise literacy rates. The first three letters of the alphabet serve as symbols of the ability to read and write, and 2015 is the year by which the program hopes to have met its aims. With the ABC-2015 program, the Ethiopian aid organization started by Karlheinz Böhm is taking action to alleviate the education crisis in that country and place a better life within reach of those living in Ethiopia.

Out of a population of nearly 80 million Ethiopians, about 30 million can neither read nor write, and 40 percent of children are unable to attend school. These deficiencies, says Böhm, are the biggest stumbling block for the Ethiopian economy and for society as a whole, since development is impossible without education: “That means that strengthening the education system is the key challenge we face in our work.”

Frankfurter Tafel e.V.

Frankfurter Tafel organizes food donations for about 20,750 needy people in Frankfurt every month. There are currently ten food distribution centers in various neighborhoods of the city, all of them utilizing local church facilities to avoid unnecessary costs.

The team of Frankfurter Tafel e.V. has also established a humanitarian “bridge” to the neighboring city of Offenbach am Main, where we serve about 480 needy people every week.

The food distribution centers do not provide needy people with everything they need, but instead are viewed as a supplement for their day-to-day needs. A healthy and nutritious diet is the top priority, and the organization hopes that distributing fresh vegetables and fruits will also prompt many of those who pick up food at the centers to cook at home.

Frankfurter Tafel also supplies food to about 31 social institutions, including substance abuse treatment facilities and those serving AIDS patients, the homeless, street children, and other groups.

Die Arche Frankfurt (The Ark, Frankfurt)

The Christian children’s and youth welfare organization Die Arche e.V. was founded in Berlin in 1995 by Bernd Siggelkow. The organization’s goal is to give children a place to go other than the streets, take action to alleviate social disadvantages, and make children once again the heart of society. At its facilities, Die Arche offers free daily services including a full hot meal, help with homework, sensible recreational activities, sports, and music – and above all, a lot of attention, because children need to feel that they are important and loved.

Die Arche now operates locations all over Germany, since the demand for these services is, unfortunately, huge. Frankfurt is one of the locations where the organization is active. The first Arche facility opened its doors here at the beginning of 2010, and now serves 110 children each day, providing free lunches, toys and games and a place to play, help with homework, and above all, a lot of attention and caring. The first location of Die Arche in Frankfurt operates in space provided by the Berthold Otto Primary School. The second Frankfurt Arche location is slated to follow at the start of 2011 in the Nordweststadt district.

But the challenges the organization hopes to overcome require help from ordinary people, too. The work of Die Arche is wholly financed by donations.
